Quick Facts About Refilling Your BBQ Tank

Here’s some quick tips and things you need to know before you stop by:

1. Do You Need a Refill?
It’s likely been a while since you last fired up the grill, and even longer since you refilled your tank. If there’s no gauge, you can use a scale to see exactly how much fuel you have left.

Look for the tare weight (TW) stamped on the handle. This is the weight of your tank when empty. Weigh your tank and subtract the tare weight to know how many pounds of propane are in your tank. The average grill uses 1.5 pounds of propane an hour at medium high.

2. How to Remove and Re-Insert Your Tank
Ready to bring your tank in for a fill-up? It’s easy to remove your tank! First, make sure your grill is switched off, and the tank valve is closed (turn it all the way to the right, until it’s tight.)

Next, unscrew the grill pressure regulator by turning it to the left. Some grill models also have a restraining bolt. Just loosen it and remove the tank. To reconnect, follow those steps in reverse. Be sure the tank valve is closed when you reconnect the pressure regulator.

3. Tank Transportation Safety
Your safety is important to us, so follow these rules when transporting your refillable cylinder:

Full cylinders must be transported in an upright position. Make sure they are secure, whether inside the vehicle, in the trunk or in the bed of a pickup.
Never leave a full cylinder in your car for any length of time, especially in direct sunlight.
No more than four 40-pound cylinders, and no tank larger than 40 pounds, can be transported inside the vehicle.

We won’t fill tanks that are damaged or show signs of corrosion or are very rusty. If you need a new portable tank, we can help you there too. We can also recertify your tank if it’s more than 12 years old—as all tanks also need to be certified and pass a U.S. Department of Transportation checklist. You can also eliminate any hassle and swap out your empty tank for a new one whenever you need a fill-up.
