Eagle Pass was the first American settlement along the Rio Grande, first as a temporary settlement for Texas militia to stop illegal trade with Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Later, a townsite and trading post were established.
Eagle Pass is the county seat of Maverick County. Today, its population is about 28,000 with a median home value of about $167,000 and a median income of about $52,000.
Pico serves Eagle Pass along with nearby towns including Del Rio, Uvalde, and Carrizo Springs.
Being a border town, a good part of the Eagle Pass economy is import/export and retail. As many as 10,000 people a day come across the Rio Grande from the Piedras Negras area to shop in Eagle Pass. People can also spend time in the town’s restaurants, as well as the nearby Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino. Maverick County Lake and Park offers playgrounds, a water park, picnic tables, a pavilion, and walking and riding trails.
Manufacturing is a major industry here, with O.F. Mossberg & Sons producing 90% of its shotguns and rifles at its Eagle Pass factory, which employs about 450 people. Utility Trailer recently opened a factory here for its line of transport refrigeration units.
Notable residents and natives of Eagle Pass include Biz Mackey, the premier catcher in the Negro Leagues in the late 1920s and early 1930s, who was one of the Negro Leagues’ all-time leaders in RBIs, slugging percentage, and total bases. His career batting average .328. Mackey was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
